I first heard this particular phrase in research, and it stuck in my mind.

I’ve learned in college that how the idea is pitched is often more important than the idea itself.

I had felt for a long time that I wasn’t accurately representing myself, my interests or ability, in certain contexts such as social media accounts where I share work I’ve done. For a period of time this didn’t matter to me. But,

It doesn’t matter what I say I can do if I can’t show it; for example, I can say I do photography but people don’t know what that means if I have no portfolio showcasing my skill and taste. Does the external acknowledgement matter? For now I think it has value, that building a platform and reputation has more potential benefits than merely validation.

And so becoming more intentional and carefully curating how I present my work is something that I’ve become increasingly interested in. I need to learn how to balance performance and sincerity.
